During my short nights my dreams of life in England were so extraordinarily vivid that the sense of the unreality of my life in the heart of Africa was heightened. When the sun rose and I saw the fine, athletic figures of naked men, with upright bearing and easy carriage, driving their cattle up to the hills, and the equally nude tall women carrying water from the lake, I rubbed my eyes and thought to myself, ” This must surely be a Garden of Eden, where men and women, young and old, all walk about naked and unashamed, untroubled by any of our conventional ideas of decency and untrammelled by dictates of fashion.” They are a happy, cheerful race, living in a state of nature, and at the same time with a high standard of morality1—in marked contrast to neighbouring tribes of negroes ; and they are steadily increasing 1 It is almost sufficient to state that syphilis is still unknown among the Kavirondo. Natives — Number — Habits — Usefulness — Present state — Future prospects. The natives of this Settlement form a portion of the broken and scattered Ngatiawa tribe, formerly very powerful here; but in 1834, attacked by the Wai- kato, under Te Whero Whero, a large and warlike tribe, dwelling more to the north, numbers were killed, many led into slavery, whilst others, retreating to the south, settled along Cook’s Strait and around Port Nicholson, so that when the first settlers landed, there were scarcely fifty natives in the place. By degrees, however, as the scattered fugitives gained confidence from the presence of the white man, and were attracted by the advantages derivable from an European community, many of them returned to their old country; and the Wai- kato, influenced by the missionaries, manumitted their slaves; so that the number now dwelling in the Settlement is about 700. They live in settled habitations called Pas, one of which, near the village, covers about an acre ofground. It is surrounded by two rows of strong split paling, three feet apart, and about twelve high; the entrance is by two or three narrow gateways, and the interior divided by similar paling into several little courts and passages: here are the houses, potato caves, cooking ovens, stacks of firewood, and small sheds for the drying and preservation of various edibles. The houses are chiefly built of raupo, a kind of rush; some of the most ambitious with a door and window, but in general they

 Appalachian Folkways

Appalachian Folkways

$44

Appalachia may be the most mythologized and misunderstood place in America, its way of life and inhabitants both caricatured and celebrated in the mainstream media. Over generations, though, the families living in the mountainous region stretching from West Virginia to northeastern Alabama have forged one of the country’s richest and most distinctive cultures, encompassing music, food, architecture, customs, and language. In Appalachian Folkways, geographer John Rehder offers an engaging and enlightening account of southern Appalachia and its cultural milieu that is at once sweeping and intimate. From architecture and traditional livelihoods to beliefs and art, Rehder, who has spent thirty years studying the region, offers a nuanced depiction of southern Appalachia’s social and cultural identity. The book opens with an expert consideration of the southern Appalachian landscape, defined by mountains, rocky soil, thick forests, and plentiful streams. While these features have shaped the inhabitants of the region, Rehder notes, Appalachians have also shaped their environment, and he goes on to explore the human influence on the landscape. From physical geography, the book moves to settlement patterns, describing the Indian tribes that flourished before European settlement and the successive waves of migration that brought Melungeon, Scotch-Irish, English, and German settlers to the region, along with the cultural contributions each made to what became a distinct Appalachian culture. Next focusing on the folk culture of Appalachia, Rehder details such cultural expressions as architecture and landscape design; traditional and more recent ways of making a living, both legal andillegal; foodstuffs and cooking techniques; folk remedies and belief systems; music, art, and the folk festivals that today attract visitors from around the world; and the region’s dialect. With its broad scope and deep research, Appalachian Folkways accurately and evocatively chronicles a w

Large segments of the wine industry are in crisis, cherished artisanal cheeses are threatened with extinction, and bistros and brasseries are disappearing at an alarming rate. How did this happen? Author Michael Steinberger investigates in this sharp and funny book, following the trail into the kitchens and vineyards of France, with detours into French politics, economics, and culture. The result is a striking portrait of a cuisine and country in transition.

Excerpt: Black pudding or blood pudding is a type of sausage made by cooking blood or dried blood with a filler until it is thick enough to congeal when cooled. It can be eaten uncooked, but is often grilled, fried or boiled in its skin. In the UK, black pudding is associated with Lancashire and particularly with the town of Bury, where it is usually boiled and served with malt vinegar out of paper wrapping. In the remainder of the country, and especially in the south, it is usually served sliced and fried or grilled as part of a traditional full breakfast; it is also served this way in the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, and the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador. The further addition of the similar white pudding is an important feature of the traditional Northumbrian, Scottish, Irish and Newfoundland breakfas… More:
