Cook Books

Can you recommend any good baby cook books?
I am thinking of making my own baby food once my baby starts solids. Any advice?
Can I even home make the cereal and rice?
the best food for the baby is home-made without any spices.. yes, it’s going to be blant but babies don’t care about it as long as it’s prepared with love.. by all means spoil your baby by home cooking
as for the ideas, i would suggest not to kill yourself with the recipes at least at the beginning, so just go to the baby food isle in any grocery store and take down the names of the ingredient combinations.. it’s as simple as that

Michael Symon’s Live to Cook: $23.99 Hometown boy turned superstar, Michael Symon is one of the hottest food personalities in America. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, he is counted among the nation’s greatest chefs, having joined the ranks of Mario Batali, Bobby Flay, and Masaharu Morimoto as one of America’s Iron Chefs. At his core, though, he’s a midwestern guy with family roots in old-world traditions. In Michael Symon’s Live to Cook, Michael tells the amazing story of his whirlwind rise to fame by sharing the food and incredible recipes that have marked his route. Michael is known for his easy, fresh food. He means it when he says that if a dish requires more than two pans to finish, he’s not going to make it. Cooking what he calls “heritage” food–based on the recipes beloved by his Greek—Italian—Eastern European—American parents and the community in Cleveland–Michael draws on the flavors of traditional recipes to create sophisticated dishes, such as his Beef Cheek Pierogies with Wild Mushrooms and Horseradish, which came out of the pierogies that his grandpa made. Michael translates the influences of the diverse working-class neighborhood in which he grew up into dishes with Mediterranean ingredients, such as those in Olive Oil Poached Halibut with Fennel, Rosemary, and Garlic; Italian-style handmade pastas, like Linguini with Heirloom Tomato, Capers, Anchovies, and Chilies; and re-imagined Cleveland favorites, such as Mac and Cheese with Roasted Chicken, Goat Cheese, and Rosemary. Part of Michael’s irresistible allure on the Food Network comes from how much fun he has in the kitchen. To help readers gain confidence and have a good time, Michael Symon’s Live to Cook has advice for cooking like a pro, starting with basic instructions for how to correctly use techniques such as braising, poaching, and pickling. There’s also information on how caramelizing vegetables and toasting spices can give dishes a greater depth of flavor–instead of a heavy, time-consuming stock-based sauce–and why the perfect finishing touch to most meat or fish dishes can be a savory hot vinaigrette instead. With fantastic four-color photography throughout and tons of helpful “Symon Says” tips, Michael Symon’s Live to Cook is bound to get anyone fired up about getting into the kitchen and cooking up something downright delicious. Michael Symon is an Iron Chef on Food Network’s Iron Chef America and a James Beard Award Winner. He is the chef and co-owner of the acclaimed restaurants Lola and Lolita, located in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as Roast, in Detroit, Michigan. Michael Ruhlman is the author of twelve nonfiction books, including The Soul of a Chef, and has coauthored many cookbooks, such as The French Laundry Cookbook with Thomas Keller. |

The Cook $8.48 It’s a holiday weekend, and while most of the students on campus have headed back home for a few days, the remaining sisters at one local sorority house are about to discover that their temporary chef uses his cleaver to carve up more than just the turkey. When they first learned that the house staff was taking the weekend off, the girls presumed that they would have to live on take-out for a couple of days. Thankfully, someone has been kind enough to provide them with a temporary chef to ensure they remain well fed. But now the girls are disappearing one by one, and it seems that the new chef may be to blame for all the bloody mayhem that’s beginning to unfold. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi |

Dad, Now What's for Dinner?: A New Collection of Family Favorites $55.98 It all started with the need to find something for dinner. From there it became a recipe, then a binder, then the first book, "Dad, what's for Dinner?". Now the tradition continues with a new and more expansive collection of recipes in "Dad, Now What's for Dinner?" Dinnertime is really not just about the food, but great recipies never hurt. Dinnertime is really about sharing a special part of the day in the kitchen and around the table enjoying and connecting with each other as a family. This book helps to ease the task with delicious and easy to prepare recipes that can be prepared and enjoyed together. From the time of my childhood, through the efforts of my Mother and Grandmother, I came to love our time in the kitchen. Dinnertime is family time. We create recipes together, we cook together. We enjoy a meal together. We share our time together. It starts as a task and an idea for dinner. It ends with a strenghtened bond of family and memories around the table which will last forever. |

…And Breakfast Too! $15.65 Times were tough. I lost my job because the contract I had been working on ran out of money. Worse, my roommate planned on getting married, another loss of income. What to do? Start a bed and breakfast, suggested my friend. You have a big house, your children have moved out, and you are an excellent hostess. All you have to do is change beds and cook a breakfast. I tried it. Sometimes I had no B&B guests for weeks; other times I could not accommodate the numerous calls for reservations. Most guests were wonderful and appreciated the ample breakfast. And they were gone most of the day to visit the many attractions in southern California, like Disneyland, the closest to my home and the most popular. I loved sharing their experiences. But best of all, changing sheets and preparing breakfast provided me with the extra income needed. Money! |

10 Grandes Exitos $7.99 As a budget-line CD, Perez Prado’s 10 Grandes Exitos makes for an affordable and fine introduction to the mambo king’s career-defining hits of the ’50s. Many of the bandleader’s signature cuts are here, including the mambo swingers “Que Rico el Mambo” and “Mambo No. 5,” in addition to the well-traveled Latin lounge number “Patricia” (used to nice effect for a party scene in Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita). Other highlights include the hyped-up bolero “Cerezo Rosa” and surging brass and percussion workouts like “La Nina Popoff” and “Caballo Negro.” As with most Prado sides from this time, 10 Grandes Exitos features super tight arrangements and plenty of timely vocal interjections by Prado himself. This is a great collection for newcomers to Prado’s music. For those wanting a more wide-ranging introduction, check out Rhino’s The Best of Perez Prado, which includes later hits like “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White.” And for fans looking for more obscure fare, there are some fine Prado titles on the Tumbao label. ~ Stephen Cook, Rovi |

12 SeasonsUnder the Florida Sun $6.82 Twelve Seasons Under the Florida Sun is as much about the chefs who contributed to it as it is the food they cook. Formal dinners, summer picnics, holiday buffets – the meals here run the gamut and every reader is sure to find something that appeals to their taste buds. Whether an experienced restaurant chef, a school-trained culinarian, a career-changer or just a life-long cook, the chefs in this book give you a glimpse into what drives them and what inspires them, as well as tips and clear instructions on how to re-create their dishes in your own kitchen or if you prefer, a way to reach them to allow them to do it for you.Fresh, high quality ingredients combined with experience and the proper technique, served to you with style and personality by eight different personal chefs who have very individual approaches to their menus.Seasonal cooking is about using what’s good and fresh and available right now. Not frozen, not canned, not grown somewhere else and shipped in. This really isn’t a new concept; home cooks with gardens have cooked with what was available for generations. Cooks without a home garden can find high-quality ingredients at the supermarket and if they are willing to drive a tiny bit farther and find one of those roadside produce markets, they can cook with local flavor without any of the weeding.Personal chefing is, well, personal and it varies from chef to chef as well as from client to client. This book and these recipes within give you a glimpse into the inner workings of the chefs as they build a meal for you.See you in the kitchen! |

1421: The Year China Discovered America $12.97 Compelling evidence that the Chinese were the first great maritime explorers — not the Europeans. Rewrite the history books! In 1421, the largest fleet the world had ever seen sailed from its base in China. The ships, huge junks nearly 500 feet long and built from the finest teak, were under the command of Emperor Zhu Di’s loyal eunuch admirals. Their mission was to proceed all the way to the end of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas and unite the whole world in Confucian harmony. Their journey would last over two years and circle the globe. When they returned, Zhu Di had lost power and China was beginning its long, self-imposed isolation from the world. The great ships rotted and the records of their journeys were destroyed. Lost was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America 70 years before Columbus and circumnavigated the globe a century before Magellan. They had also discovered Antarctica, reached Australia 350 years before Cook, and solved the problem of longitude 300 years before the Europeans. In this fascinating historical detective story, Gavin Menzies shares the remarkable account of his discoveries and the incontrovertible evidence supporting them. |

Chapters: American Revolution, First Voyage of James Cook, Pugachev’s Rebellion, Thomas Percy, Spanish-portuguese War, 1776-1777, Partition Sejm, 1770s in Archaeology. Excerpt: The American Revolution was the political upheaval during the last half of the 18th century in which thirteen colonies in North America joined together to break free from the British Empire, combining to become the United States of America. They first rejected the authority of the Parliament of Great Britain to govern them from overseas without representation, and then expelled all royal officials. By 1774 each colony had established a Provincial Congress, or an equivalent governmental institution, to form individual self-governing states. The British responded by sending combat troops to re-impose direct rule. Through representatives sent in 1775 to the Second Continental Congress, the new states joined together at first to defend their respective self-governance and manage the armed conflict against the British known as the American Revolutionary War (177583, also American War of Independence). Ultimately, the states collectively determined that the British monarchy, by acts of tyranny, could no longer legitimately claim their allegiance. They then severed ties with the British Empire in July 1776, when the Congress issued the Declaration of Independence, rejecting the monarchy on behalf of the new nation. The war ended with effective American victory in October 1781, followed by formal British abandonment of any claims to the United States with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The American Revolution initiated a series of social, political, and intellectual transformations in early American society and government. Americans rejected the oligarchies common in aristocratic Europe at… More: |

1800 Miles on a Burmese Pony $12.87 In early 1887 the adventurous, if inexperienced, equestrian explorer set off with a Ghurka orderly, a Madrassi cook, an interpreter known as the Archbishop and of course the hero of this tale, Joe the Burmese Pony. There is no tale in all of equestrian travel literature which paints a picture of a more loveable scamp than Joe, this delightful four-footed rascal. With his keen eye, Younghusband regales his readers with remarks on the customs of the country, The whole of our baggage was not more than two respectable mule loads but it made me positively weep to see a great brawny elephant looking quite injured at having to carry a load that one of our regimental mules would have smiled sarcastically at. Yet this is no story of brawny elephants. It deals instead with Younghusband’s Burmese pony, who despite his diminutive size, gave the professional horseman more than he bargained for. |

Excerpt: Career (United States): Polly was an American brig that was swamped during a gale in late 1811, and spent the next six months adrift in the Atlantic Ocean . The saga of Polly was mentioned by Edgar Allan Poe in his novel The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket . History Polly was a 131-ton brig, probably constructed by shipbuilder Alden Briggs, at Pembroke, Massachusetts , sometime between 1788 and 1805. During her service life, the ship was home ported in Boston, Massachusetts .Shipwreck On 12 December 1811, Polly departed Boston with a cargo of lumber and provisions. The ship was commanded by Captain Casneau, and carried eight others: the mate, four seamen, an Indian cook, a passenger named Mr. Hunt, and an African-American slave or servant girl belonging to Hunt. Three days out, on 15 December, the Polly was caught in a severe gale . The storm capsized the ship and the masts were either carried away by the storm, or cut away by the crew. Relieved of the topweight, Polly rolled back onto an even keel. The ship was completely filled with water, but the cargo of lumber kept the ship afloat. However, two people were lost during the storm. The survivors began to salvage the wreck for usable items. Quantities of salted pork were recovered, and the survivors ate that raw until the cook managed to start a fire twelve days after the wreck, by using two sticks rubbed together. . The supplies of salted pork ran out after forty days, and the survivors were forced to eating barnacles |
